Sony Ericsson’s effort with the Wii-like Zeemote

The next iteration of the iPhone (come on, you knew we would start talking about it at some point) is likely to have new motion-sensing abilities, far better than the current accelerometer.

According to Taiwanese news sources the MEMS gyroscopes, as the new technology is known, would allow the phone to work out where it is in a 3D environment, in a similar way to how the Nintendo Wii works.

The Motorola RAZR can stop a bullet at Freshmobile.us

The life saving phone… we don’t know if it still works

A man was happily trundling along in his lawnmower, minding his own business, when he said he felt like he had been punched in the chest, right at the point where he had clipped his Motorola RAZR.

He took off the phone to inspect it for damage, thinking a piece of debris had flicked up from his ‘mower, and lo and behold a bullet fell into his lap!

Nokia still top of charts, Motorola in real trouble - Freshmobile.us

Motorola’s handsets just aren’t catching the imagination any more

Despite suffering what you might call a ‘wobbly’ 2008, Nokia has still got a more than healthy lead in the mobile phone sales charts. Motorola has fared less well… it has scrubbed nearly a third of its market share.

Hard to shift handset division continues to hurt comms giant

Motorola loses £20 on every phone it ships - Freshmobile.us

The Slvr: exciting innovation or just a Razr that doesn’t fold?

Motorola announced nearly $400 million (£245 million) of losses for the third quarter, thanks to a desperately unprofitable mobile phone division that it’s keen to sell off.

Despite shifting over 25 million handsets, including the double-touch Krave ZN4 and a bunch of Rokrs, the phone division alone lost $840 million (£515 million) – that’s over £20 on every phone sold.

Motorola - Z10 - Latest Review Freshmobile.us test

Motorola’s Z10 is a quirky little handset. It follows on from the groundbreaking Z8 in general design. It looks like a slider, and indeed it is a slider, but with a twist. Or rather, with a bend.

As you push the upper and lower sections of this phone apart the handset seems to bend and you finish up with a phone that sits along the curve of your face when you are on a call. This clever little manoeuvre is achieved thanks to a hinge in the back casing. Quite simple, but effective.

The MOTOAURA – a little cuckoo-bananas

Motorola unveils lunatic handset? - Freshmobile.us

Motorola is bringing back the twist screen

They say all genius has madness contained within it, and that mantra is one that Motorola seems to have embraced with the MOTOAURA, as it attempts to design its way out of the crisis it has found its handset arm in.

The new device features a twist-to-open screen, making it a similar handset to the maligned V70, debuted in 2002, which used a similar system.

But the rebirth of the design means the screen estate has to be re-imagined, something the phone hasn’t managed to do according to Mobile-Review.

Tweaked

The engineers have only tweaked the interface to fit into the new 1.58-inch screen size (roughly, as it’s hard to measure a circle in the same way you would a normal shaped screen).

Social networking is Moto’s ‘killer app’

Krave – believed to have a similar design

Motorola is apparently looking to an Android powered phone with a touchscreen, a sliding keyboard and enhanced social-networking functionality to end its recent slump.

At one point Moto had the most successful phone on the market with its now iconic Razr, but a series of bad decisions has left the manufacturer in the doldrums.

The company is still seeking the market-leading phone that will put it back on top, and a report in Business Week suggests that it has plumped for the Google backed Android OS.
