New Android handset confirmed – but no Nuviphone in sight

Garmin-Asus has announced that it will be bringing a smartphone based on the Android operating system to the market next year.

According to Jacqueline Yang, associate vice president of marketing at Asus, the firm will manage to get the device out by Q1 2010, or possibly sooner.

Computer giant will bring out Google smartphone

Acer – Do the Android

PC giant Acer has confirmed that it will be releasing an Android mobile phone in 2009.

Acer is a huge figure in the computer world, but is also pushing for a share of the smartphone market.

And it seems that the rumour that an Android smartphone would be arriving in September was close to the mark, with the head of the company’s phone unit, Aymar de Lencquesaing, confirming a 2009 arrival.

The Zune will stay a Zune, apparently

It seems that the rumours of a Zune phone debuting at CES 2009 are false, after Microsoft came out and laughed them off like a jolly old uncle at Christmas dinner.

Speaking to Gizmodo, Brian Seitz, Group Manager of Zune said: “No Zune phone at CES.” And he should know.

Zune unlikely to morph into a phone

According to analysts, Steve Ballmer is expected to announce impending arrival of the Zune phone at CES 2009.

Trip Chowdhry, of Global Equities Research, asserts that the company will combine elements of the Zune interface (from the yet-to-leave the US iPod slayer wannabe) and its Danger Sidekick handheld units.

At the 3GSM event in Macau, TheMedicalPhone showed off a new flip device, the iCEPhone, which extended outwards not once, but twice.

The device has a gaming style keypad and a full QWERTY keyboard, as well as a three inch touchscreen to boot, so even if you accidentally break one interface, there’s always another to back you up on this WinMo-powered handset.

The Kogan Agora is coming to Australia in January

The Kogan Agora is only the second Android phone

Google’s new mobile operating system, Android, is now available on a handset that isn’t the G1.

Only available in Australia, the phone is called the Kogan Agora, and will be available in Q1 of next year – 29 January, to be exact.

Like the G1, the phone will feature a whole host of Google-based applications.

Nokia N97 – 2009

Nokia has unveiled its new flagship model – the Nokia N97, complete with touchscreen, full qwerty keyboard and the hopes of the Finnish nation.

The N97 takes over, unsurprisingly, from the N96 as the phone giant’s key flagship product, competing with the likes of Apple’s iPhone 3G and the likes of Sony Ericsson’s X1, BlackBerry Storm and Samsung Omnia.
